The Fast Fifty

I finally got a fast fifty - AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8! I never purchased one before because it didn't focus on my D40. For a time, while I was using the D40, I used the Nikon 35/1.8
which is an AF-S (built-in focus motor) type of lens. Since I now have the D300s, I can use lenses that don't have a focus motor.
So far, I like Nikon's fast fifty. First of all, the price is unbeatable for a lens of this quality. I picked mine up at Amazon.com for about $120; which is simply amazing (I wish all lenses were this inexpensive). Most photographers are familiar with the "Nifty Fifty", but if you're new to photography, this is a great addition to your kit. You simply can't go wrong by buying a fast fifty.
The shot on the left was taken with the 50/1.8 at ISO 1600. This is a picture of a nurse taking blood from my wife. I've been bringing my camera with me more often since purchasing a Kata messenger bag (see earlier post). My goal has been to do more street photography as well as documenting some of the more personal moments of my life.
This is one of the sharper images because, like I said before, I been shooting quite a bit of street stuff. Most of those shots can be a little soft or blurred because I'm either shooting at a slow shutter speed, or swinging the camera quickly to the subject which can also cause camera shake. I like the imperfections in some street images. Capturing the "Decisive Moment" sometimes means that the shot may not be great technically, but what matters most to me is telling a story. To be honest, it's almost a relief not to worry about sharpness or retouching a models face. It's actually kinda liberating in my opinion.
In closing, the Nikon 50/1.8 is a great lens, especially for the price. If you're considering purchasing your first lens to add to your kit lens, then this is the way to go. Low-light shooting is often difficult with a kit lens, so you'll defineatly be happy with the f1.8 provided by this lens. You simply can't beat a fast fifty when it comes to the price/performance ratio!
