"Bigma" To The Rescue
I usually use my Nikon 55-200VR, and recently the Sigma 70-200/2.8, to shoot motor sports. They're great lenses, but they don't have the reach to fill the frame when shooting motorcycles. I planned to get a 2X Teleconverter, but I ran out of time and money. So, I decided to rent the Sigma 50-500mm F4-6.3 EX DG HSM APO also known as the "Bigma".
I didn't think the lens was all that big. It appeared to be similar in size to my Sigma 70-200/2.8. Both lenses are pretty heavy though. It was a brutally hot day(100* F) at the track. To make things worse, I was carrying two D40's, an 18-55mm, the "Bigma", as well as other accessories. All of this packed in a Tamrac Velocity 10X. I have to admit I was hurtin'.
Despite the heavy pack, I was excited to be at the track again. This was the first official race for me this year, and I had fun as usual. This was also my first experience at 500mm. I learned quickly that it's hard to keep a motorcycle going 100+ mph in the frame. Although, it really came in handy while shooting the freestyle event.
Overall, I enjoyed the long focal length of the Sigma 50-500. I'd really like something faster, but I had plenty of light to work with. The next time I rent from BorrowLenses.com, I'm might consider the Nikon 600mm f/4 .
