A Lighting Diagram App For iPod/iTouch
While browsing the iTunes store, I found this really cool iPhone/iTouch app called Strobox. This free (my favorite price) app allows you to create lighting diagrams with ease.
I have been looking for something like this. While on a shoot, I sometimes draw the lighting diagram. The rest of the time I try to remember, but end up forgetting either the setup or the settings. Now, I can whip out the iTouch, and quickly make a diagram. This can be useful when you want to reproduce the same type of shot.
Strobox is pretty easy to use. It contains many different types of lights, backgrounds, modifiers, and flags. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have modifiers for speedlights.
After making a light diagram you can save it as a .png file, then you can send it out in an email. Since I don't have an iPhone, I save the diagram until I get home. Next, I send an email to
Lighting dragram for photo shown abovemyself over wi-fi. When I open the email, I then download the file. That way I can upload it to my Picasa Web Album where I can link to it in the photo description on flickr.
I'm looking forward to future updates that will hopefully include speedlights with modifiers. Some other features that would be helpful:
- Text inputs for the settings on each light
- Arrows for showing light-to-subject distances
- Allow the diagram to be resized
- Show color gels on speedlights
- Change the color of backgrounds
Overall, I'm happy with the Strobox application. I really can't complain since it is free. This is an extremely useful tool for me, which I'm sure I'll be using regularly.

Thanks for the diagram info. I could probably use this on my new site that takes famous photographs and tries to guess the lighting:
