5 Photo Products Under $100

In these times of economic turmoil many photogs don't have the extra dough to buy the high-end kit that they desire.  As we approach the holiday season I thought it would be appropriate to do a list of items priced below $100.  Photography can be an expensive hobby, but there's lots of gear that can be had without breaking the bank.  Here's my list of cheap goods that I've purchased recently or plan to buy in the near future.

1.)  Complete 5 in 1 40X60" Reflector Kit - $82.99

This is a COMPLETE SET, which includes:

  • 5 in 1 Panels: 40x60 inches; Translucent, White, Silver, Gold and Black in its own carry pouch

  • Reflector holder arm and grip head

  • 7 ft stand

This is a must have accessory. The translucent panel diffuses hard light, while the black surface absorbs and reduces light. The while, silver or gold surfaces reflect light to produce the desire cool, bright contrasty or warm effect you choose.

These types of reflectors can be handy when used for a simple one-light reflector on outdoor shoots.  Simply place the subject in open shade and point the reflector so that the sun light is reflected on the subject.  You can also use one as a fill in a multiple light setup.  This kit is near the top of my wish list.

2.) Strobist Style Flash Mount Kit - $64.99

If you already have a Speedlite or two, this kit has everything you need to get started on a budget. The Studio Flash Mount Umbrella Kit is easy to use and set up.

The kit includes:

Two 7 feet light stands

Two Deluxe Swivel flash mount umbrella holders

Two Adjustable and removable cold shoes

Two white Umbrellas

I purchased this kit because I needed a lightweight, and portable setup.  When I ordered the kit it was only $49.99 with free shipping.  So, check out eBay regularly to see if the price drops.

Rainslee3.)  Op/Tech Rainsleeve - $5 per pair

I recently bought one of these for shooting in bad weather.  This is a great product for use in the rain or snow.  The Op/Tech Rainsleeve is hard to beat as far as price is concerned.  I've seen far more expensive solutions.  And yea, I know that you can use a Ziplock bag, but this looks more professional, especially on a paid shoot.

Rainsleeve Flash

The Rainsleeve Flash offers the same great features as the original Rainsleeve yet can accommodate a camera shoe-mounted flash. It effectively shields a camera, lens and flash unit from the elements and fits easily in the pocket or camera bag.  It's only a couple bucks more - about $7.50

4.) Opteka Grey Card Set - $12.95

A grey card is an easy way to get the correct white balance.  Simply take a shot with the subject holding the card.  Then, while in your image processing software, select "Set Grey Point" and click on the grey card in the photo.  The software makes the necessary adjustments which you can apply to all of the images shot in the same light.  These aren't perfect though, some grey cards aren't exactly 18% grey.  But, they're better than trying to "eyeball" the correct color temperature.

5.)  The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby - $16.49

I got this book when I first started doing digital photography.  It's cool because it gives a one page explantion on each topic.  Kelby tells you how to set up the camera, and BOOM, you're there.  I went through the book over and over until I felt comfortable with each topic.  If you're new to digital photography, and you can only get one thing on this list, this should be it.  Obtaining knowledge will always improve your photography more than any one piece of gear will.
