Photokina 2008
Photokina, one of the largest photo/imaging trade shows in the world, will be held Sept. 23-28 in Cologne, Germany. The trade show is held every two years. In 2006, more that 160,000 people attended the event, and hundreds of vendors show up to unveil their new gear. For that reason, now may not be a good time to buy a camera. That old camera you've been eyeing for months might be replaced by a new model. That being said, by the time that you're able to purchase the new model, months will have gone by. So, it may be best to pick-up that old camera now instead of waiting. Think of how many shots you'll miss while you wait for something that may or may not be announced at the show.
Then again, many people had predicted that the Nikon D90 would be introduced at Photokina. The news leaked, the cameras shipped to dealers, and now you can order your D90. It just goes to show how unreliable rumors can be. I try not to pay too much attention to the "gear gossip". Personally, I like to buy gear that's nearing the end of the production run. That way, I can buy at
reduced prices. Most amateurs tend to suffer from "gear lust", and I'm no different. What separates me from many, is that my budget limits me to what I can buy, so chasing the "latest and greatest" is not an option in my case. I also understand that a new camera won't improve my photography (See Does A New Camera = Better Photography?) . That can only be accomplished with study and practice. I've taken pictures with my D40 that are sharper, more colorful, and better exposed than some I've seen with far more expensive cameras. It all comes down to knowing your equipment.
Photokina is quite a distance away for us in North America. But for those who are closer to Germany, or have the spare cheddar to fly over there, this event sounds like it would be incredible. With hundreds of vendors, photography exhibitions, and a chance to mingle with fellow photographers, Photokina promises to be an absolute treat.
