Nikon's New 18-105mm VR Lens
There's a big buzz about Nikon's new camera, the D90. But, with all the hoopla about the camera, one of Nikon's newest product was overlooked by many. For $299, when purchased with the D90, or $399 seperately, you can get the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR. It's Nikon's new general purpose DX lens.I am slightly interested in this lens. I would use it as a walk-around lens. My Nikkor 18-55mm kit lens that was included with the D40 is the lens I use most often. But, sometimes I need a bit more reach than the 55mm end can offer. I also have the Nikkor 55-200mm VR zoom which gives more reach. Unfortunately, this involves changing lenses to get closer to my subject. Now I'm running the risk of getting dust on the sensor. The dust will have to be removed (see "Giottos Rocket-Air Blower"), or I'll have dust on every image from that point on. Then I'll have to remove the spots in PP, which can be tedious. There are two reasons why I wouldn't get this lens. First of all, it is not considered a fast lens by any means. I'm really interested in replacing my glass with faster stuff (i.e. f/2.8, f/1.8, etc.) because I want to do a lot of available-light photography. Secondly, I would still have to change lenses to get more reach. Occasionally, you don't have the chance to "zoom with your feet". Furthermore, I may not have time to walk forward, as I might miss the shot. The Nikkor 18-200mm would be a better choice, but it's also considered slow (f/3.5-5.6). Also, it's a little more pricey at about $650 on Amazon.com, but well worth it. Despite that, it's a great walk-around lens because you don't have to swap glass to get the composition you want.
Overall, the Nikkor 18-105mm should be a decent piece of glass. It has ED glass, which is pretty nice, and the lens is not terribly expensive. One drawback that I should mention is the plastic mount. This could become a problem as the years go by. But, If your budget is limited and you want to shoot in this focal range, I'd go for it by all means. For those looking for a new camera in the $1300 price range, the D90 and the 18-105 would make a great combo. For more information about the 18-105 check out Nikon's website.
